Simple question, if my Dell E6220 didn't ship with a backlit keyboard can I upgrade it to have one? if I simply fit a backlit keyboard will it work?

I recall doing a swap for the same reason on one of my Dell notebooks (Latitude E4300 I think). I work on the principle that if Dell offered both as options then they would work with the same mainboard as otherwise they would need twice as many types of mainboard in the inventory. Look at your mainboard and see if there is a socket for a backlight cable. The keyboard photo here shows three cables which, I suspect, are for keyboard, trackpoint and backlight.
