Today, for the first time, my E-6500 got really, really hot... Core Temp had the CPU temps up to over 145 degrees F, and it was very hot to the touch, and the fans weren't kicking on for some reason.

I'm wondering what, exactly--hardware or software--there is in my computer (XP) that controls the fans, and tells them when to kick on...

145F is only 63 degrees C, which is actually not that hot. Modern Intel CPUs can operate at up to 100C, or 212F. As long as you're below 80C, or 176F, you're perfectly within good operating temperatures. You obviously shouldn't reach 80C while wordprocessing though.

The BIOS controls the fan. You can't really change the way it works. There are some 3rd party fan controllers, but none work well with the E series.

The BIOS controls the fans using data from several temperature sensors. Do you have the latest BIOS version? Which CPU and GPU do you have?

You can monitor the temperatures of some components using HWmonitor. I8KfanGUI can monitor both temperatures and fan activity.

How is it possible to control the fans? The I8KfanGUI controls are not stable.
