I need help.

I have recently inherited this labtop, it has centrino inside and windows vista operating system. For some reason, many of the applications require password authorizations and I believe by reformating this laptop, the error will stop.

Is it possible to reformat this laptop without using the windows CDs, and if it is, how? I remember reformating my desktop in the past with just presenting a couple of buttons as the computer started up.
