Internal Dell R/RW DVD drive does not recognize any music CD's. Latitude D630, Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1.

    Suggestions?

just a guess - and maybe offtopic, anyway: one of (tons of) possible reasons is vmware running. try switching it off if you use it to see if it's the cause in your case...

Does it show the contents of the CD if you look in Explorer?

No. Does not even recognize that a CD is in the drive.

    1. Does it read any optical disc?

    2. I would uninstall the IDE channel with current transfer rate of Ultra DMA 2 and let Windows redetect it (go to the top of the list in Device Manager and right click for the option).

    3. Check for a firmware update for the optical drive.

    4. See this.

John, Thanks for all the assistance.
Did a bunch of updates, so I'm not sure which one worked, but the main thing is that is problem now fixed. Thanks Again.
