I had never thought too much about the temperature in my laptop averaging about 134F (57C), but after I upgraded my desktop to an E6700 and it was running at about 86F (30C), I figured I'd take a second look at my laptop.

Is that kind of idle temperature normal for this CPU? The fan and heatsink are free of dust, I have some Arctic Silver grease on the CPU, the back of the laptop is jacked up about an inch, and I'm running the latest BIOS (A10).

57 does seem a bit high... we have a D620 with an NVS 110M and a T7600 at my workplace, and I think it idles somewhere between 40 and 50 (not totally sure, can check on Monday). You could try swapping the thermal past or dusting out the fans, but in the grand scheme of things, as long as you aren't cracking 80 or so at load, you should be fine. Even then, all current Intel mobile processors are rated up to 100C.

Everything seems to be at 135F or so, including GPU, memory, and chipset...maybe I need to replace the thermal pads too. I ran out of thermal grease after upgrading CPUs in my desktops, so I guess I'll have to go get some more...

I got some new Arctic Silver 5 grease in today, and the CPU is running at about 125F (52C).

It's a bit better, but the RAM is at 159F (71C). Yikes! They are 2 x 2GB PC2-6400 OCZ memory, and when I put in my old 2 x 2GB PC2-5300 Kingston memory, I get about the same temperatures. Maybe it is the higher temperatures that we have been getting here. About 86F inside right now.

EDIT: Hmm, there's a pretty big gap between the chips and the heatsink...perhaps a thicker coat of grease will help...
