A user of mine reported a problem with her screen being black. You can actually see the windows logon prompt but its really dark. I set her up on a port replicator with an external monitor, which displays fine. So is it the display on the laptop monitor thats causing the problem? Its a Dell Latitude D620 notebook.Any Help is appreciated.

May sound silly, but I take it she hasn't turned down the screen brightness, fn and up/down keys on my vostro 1500.

If it isn't a matter of screen brightness, then her inverter or backlight is dead. I'd bet on the backlight if you can still make out the display, but inverters are apparently usually more likely to fail. In this scenario you can either replace the backlight and/or inverter or buy a new display. The latter is usually the easiest solution, but the former may be significantly cheaper (though replacing a backlight can be a PITA a lot of times).

Whats it look like hooked up to an external monitor? Commander Wolf is correct on his assessment about the backlight and inverter. Backlights should only be replaced in a "clean room" environment as dust and other debris always seem to find a way in.
