Does anyone know why my Latitude D600 won't play back-up (burnt) dvds, but it plays the original disc? When I put in the burnt disc I hear a clicking sound, but nothing else happens. I have been trying to use burnt -R discs and dual layer discs; these discs play on other dvd players. Should my laptop plays these discs? And if so why doesn't it? I believe it still has the original drive in it; I bought the laptop second hand.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

First check the Dell support site for any firmware updates for the burner. Then check if the lens is dirty. Also try some different media. I have had problems in the past with not being able to read some brands of disc in the computer which burnt them

If those don't fix the problem then it's probably time to look for a replacement burner. They are standard parts but you may need to swap the bezel.

I downloaded all of the firmware updates without any success. I'll try a lens cleaner next. I have tried different media brands and it acts the same way. I am actually burning the discs on a different computer because this one is only a DVD ROM.

I am thinking the drive is beat, but I would like to make sure before I buy another one. One other thing is that when I go to the properties of the drive it doesn't give a manufacturer or model # and the support person at dell said this could point to the drive being bad.

Device Manager should give a model number such as TS-L632A from which it is possible to work out the make and specifications. Otherwise it will be necessary to take the burner out and check the label. Most likely it is 1/2" thick "slim" IDE notebook burner. These are common units although SATA is now taking over.
