I have a secondhand Latitude D600 which came without a recovery CD or a recovery partition. Recently the Windows installation got corrupted and Windows Restore was unable to solve the problem, so I need to reinstall Windows XP. When I try to format the drive under NTFS, it stalls at 4% and just stops. The NTFS quick format works, but my new installation is having a variety of problems and the searching I've done suggests that it's important to do a regular format, not a quick one. Any ideas?

Run chkdsk or a third-party harddrive diagnostic tool. There may be problems with the HDD.

Do this. Pop the drive into a external enclosure, delete all data (assume you backup) and delete partition or formatted NTFS. If you have no enclosure it will work inside your desktop with sata connection do same procedure then pop it back into the laptop. If problem still occur it could be hdd is failing. D600 is a older model, I have repair a D600 with part working/doa hdd that needed replacing.
