I have a sample of this model that appears to have vignetting on the upper edge of the display. Is this a common problem with the model? I'm wondering if I'll just get used to it, but this is definitely noticeable in day-to-day use.

As for the question about heat, I notice that it gets a bit hot under load (which is to be expected) but overall stays relatively well ventilated.

Do you mean that the display is darker along the top edge? This could be caused by very uneven backlighting in which case you could ask Dell to replace the display.

Yes, it's significantly darker along the top edge. I'll see if Dell can do something regarding this even though technically the machine functions. I've just never seen backlighting this uneven before.

I would consider very uneven backlighting to be a defect that is possibly tolerable on a consumer notebook but not on a relatively expensive business notebook. I think you will find that Dell will be willing to arrange a replacement. See the recent discussion about getting a display replaced for what was a very subjective deficiency.

No the msata bracket gets in the way of a 2.5 7mm drive. You need to buy the bracket but many in the e7440 thread just put it in the bay and put the cover on. It's a nearly perfect fit so most didn't bother with a caddy.

The 2.5" drive caddy looks like this. You can use the screws that fix the mSATA interposer (keep it somewhere in case you want to put it back again). I would note that a 7mm drive tends to be pushed up by a ribbon cable which, for reasons best known to Dell, is slightly humped. However, I not seen any reports of damage to the cable occuring when the drive is pushed down on top of it.

Thanks for that but if I don't use the caddy how does the 7mm ssd stay in place securely then?

It has limited space to move around laterally and is partly secured by the SATA cable. You could also put a thin foam pad on the drive which will press against the base of the computer when it is in place.

An SSD will be less vulnerable to damage than an HDD if it is slightly loose but if you are worried then invest in Dell's little bit of metal.

Is it usual for this laptop to have some light bleeding?

(Still new to this site, how do I upload pictures?)

This is coming from the replacement screen which is the same matte auo panel model initially. The first screen had similar amounts of bleeding at the bottom.

Although it doesn't bother me that much, would replacing the screen again (glossy panel this time) via a third party stop the bleed?
