Well, the new backlit keyboard finally came in, and it appears to be either DOA or not the right part. The seller said it works with E6220, but the packing slip says 6420... Do they use the same keyboard design and connector? The keyboard fits perfectly, and the connector seemed to fit quite well, but the connector's ribbon cable was quite a bit longer as if the connector's spot on the mobo should be more to the center than far right on the E6220.

I took pictures and will upload them later, but does anyone have any advice on doing this swap? Does the backlit keyboard require anything more than just the standard connector on the right side?

I believe the entire Exx20 line should use the same keyboard. I don't think there's any difference between the connection for the standard and backlit keyboard (such was the case on the Exx00 and Exx10), so if you aren't getting backlighting, you're doing something wrong or the keyboard is bad (or maybe not a backlit model?).

I'd try reseating everything - judging by the E6220 service manual, it does look like you have to fold the ribbon cable - and making sure everything is enabled in BIOS.

I know it's backlit because it has the extra symbol on the right arrow key. The entire keyboard didn't work, not just the backlighting part, which leads me to think it's just a faulty connector.

You have to fiddle with it a bit. When I replaced mine it didn't work initially. For some ignorant reason notebooks are still using PS/2 keyboards and touchpad interfaces instead of internal USB connections. I had to install mine and just kept swapping back and forth from the old to new... just booting into the BIOS. If you install the new keyboard it may light up but the BIOS might not recognize it. As soon as you can turn it on and hit F2 and it takes you to the BIOS you can reassemble it.

And yes, mine is an E6420 backlit keyboard with the trackpoint nub.
