Just received Vostro 1220 laptop from dell India with following configuration

    2.2ghz processor (core 2 duo)
    3gb ram
    windows vista business
MATT SCREEN - yes they have this available for $100 (rs.4500 extra)
3 years complete cover with next business day service
    160gb hard drive
    6 cell battery
    65 watt adapter
    all other standard stuff.

first thing i did is un-install norton antivirus due to exteremly bad experience with it in the past. installed norton ghost took backup image of hard drive, partitioned it into 2 paritions with paragon hard disk manager, took image again, encrypted drive with truecrypt.

now will start installing other software's after 1-2 days.

    my first impression Comments:
    1) very light weight, very bright, looks like pure business machine
    2) build is solid except lcd do twists and show liquid kind thing when you put pressure from sides or try to mold it
    3) i connected 22" external monitor 1650x1050, it was driving it fine
    4) I am not yet got used to fingerprint reader, i tried it 10 times, it seems to be not perfect or may be i am not yet comfortable with it. I will update you on this, but i won't be using it much because i have to swipe finger 5-6 times before it recognize it.

i think this laptop is awesome and you should totally go for it. I will also be registering for windows 7 free upgrade, which i may not be installing because we have vista business deployed in our office computers and we plan to keep it till windows 7 sp1 is out.

    edit:
forgot to mention, it cost me rs.54,000 + Rs.2400 octrio (municipal tax) thats $1100 for machine and $50 for octrio. Price includes taxes, 3 years complete cover, next business day warranty and all other upgrades.

Nice.. but how is the noiselevel on it?

Is the fan always on? How loud is it?
Are there any whining high-pitch noises?

Seems like a powerfull little machine, but noiselevel is key for me.

If noise is a critical factor for you, then I would suggest a macbook. I have 2009 plastic white macbook which is silent during normal operation and fan turns on onlywhen i'm playing a game or watching a dvd

    To Maxberry:

Can you give a review of your 1220? I'm considering getting one.

    Thanks
