    System specs:

    Intel i7-2640
    8GB Ram
Samsung 256 SSD PM830 (came from Dell)
    Nvidia NVS 4200
    Win 7 Pro 64-bit

Just got a Latitude E6420 not too long ago. I noticed after a couple weeks of using it Windows would randomly freeze. It would force me to reboot the system. Sometimes when the desktop is loading the computer freezes again and repeats this over and over. I got fed up and just went ahead and reinstalled Windows with the recovery CD included (thinking it was a Windows issue). Sure enough I am installing updates to my Adobe software and it freezes again.

I really do think it's the SSD, but can't confirm. I'm a bit lost about the BIOS diagnostics as it doesn't really show any errors when I run it. It seems like it's always stuck on 20% for the long test.

What is everyone's suggestions on how to proceed? I am already past the return period, but I am covered under warranty.

it could be the RAM or the SSD drive,

You can try booting of a single stick of RAM, and swap them and try again.

I have also had issues as you and it was the SSD drive.

You can try checking for a firmware update for the SSD

What is the brand and model number of the SSD ?

    Cheers

Model is listed in first post. It is a Samsung PM830 256GB. This is what Speccy shows me.

What is the best way to figure out if I need a firmware update? I don't think I've ever seen driver/firmware updates for SSDs on Dell's website. Should I go elsewhere?

I will try the RAM suggestion. The BIOS diagnostics did not show a failure with the RAM, although I did not do a thorough test.

well if there as a firmware update from dell it would be listed on the Drivers page for your laptop - using your service tag.

Another thing you could try is to use another hard drive and see if it locks up.

but definitely try the Memory swap if you have 2 DIMMs use one at a time, and try them in both slots
