Is this 2011 Dell Latitude E6420 i7 8GB 320GB Laptop worth $200?
Latitudes are tanks and real work horses.
My main concern would be the MB is now 7 years old. Is that too old? How long does a MB usually last?
Here are the specs:
Dell Latitude E6420 - 14" - i7-2720QM - 8GB RAM - 320 GB 7200rpm HDD - 14 inch 16:9, 1600 x 900 pixel, LED TFT, glossy: LED backlight - 9-cell battery - NVIDIA NVS 4200M GPU
It has minimal scratches on edges, none on lid or screen.

Should I bite for $200? My budget is $400 or less. This would be a backup laptop that I would take with me most of the time.

 

I still have an old M6400 & M6500 that works after all these donkey years. As long as the previous owner did not abuse the laptop, it should last quite a long time under normal circumstances.

Even if the motherboard goes belly up, the replacement should be fairly cheap to get by now.

 

My M6600 still works and that is 7 years old, but I would proceed with caution.

One thing to check very carefully is the battery (how much ware and how much charge can it hold and for how long etc.). Mine died about 3 years ago and I replaced it about 1 year ago, they're not cheap. I also have issues when playing video now for some reason but it is intermittent and not a big deal. Now that I have the 7730 the M6600 has become a really big external HD and backup system.

What are you going to do with the laptop?

The specs on the laptop are not good, slow HD, not FHD screen, so little RAM and a glossy screen.

Depending on what you want to do with it I would buy something newer and lighter, and probably more powerful.

 

As for the battery and memory, I plan to get a new 9-cell battery and up the memory to 16GB.
I never play video.
Slow HDD??? 320 GB 7200rpm HDD is not exactly slow, but I plan to put in a SSD.

I plan to use it for on the run to check my photography and CS6 work. Not too concerned about the screen as I will be running it via hdmi to my 42" HDTV screen to do photoshop CS6 work when at home. This laptop has to be much better than my 5 year old Lenovo Ideapad S400 that I'm replacing. It has a slow i3 and only 4GB memory, slow HDD, poor battery runtime etc. The Lenovo Ideapad S400 does photoshop fine so this Dell should blow that out of the water. Much better specs. The Dell Latitude is suppose to me a workhorse.

It is not worth $200 and you are likely to run into problems with a machine that old.

My E6230 just bit the dust (the case was falling apart and the screen started randomly blacking out). I got an E5470 with a FHD and i5 for $250. Deals are out there if you are willing to hunt them.

For a little bit more money you could probably do an E6440 these days. Sandy Bridge is way too old at this point to pay that much money for, especially since the HDD will need to be replaced pretty much immediately.

 

How about the Dell Latitude E6540 ? I'm trying to keep it around$300 or less on eBay. Trying to get a i7/1080p display/16GG memory with possible discrete GPU for that price range. Probably why it is going to be 4-5 years old.

 

This one for $300 that has a small ding on the cover was shipped last year in February and warranty expires in 2019.

As you can see in my sig, I've painted several laptops so that ding won't be an issue for me.
