Hi all, I have to buy a new notebook for work before July - before the money disappears. Wondering if anyone has any info if Dell will have any new Latitudes out by then or not. I am looking at the 14" size.

I could not find any roadmaps that showed if there are any mainstream quadcores on the horizon.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I wouldn't expect any significant change until after the next Intel platform comes out, and I don't think that is imminent. And that replacement is likely to be very similar, and probably called the E6410, so that the peripherals and a lot of the parts are the same as for the E6400.

It was scheduled to come out q3 '09, but PC makers are pushing Intel to delay the launch since they haven't gone through the lifetime of the Montevina platform. So, nehalem mobile/capella may not appear until early 2010. Add the time Dell will take to come out with a new model, and you have potentially a year. Now is as good a time as any.

Dell usually refreshes the Latitude line about once a year. In 2008 it was the E6x00 and E5x00, in 2007 it was the Dx30, in 2006 it was the Dx20, and so on and so forth. Seeing as the E6x00 represents a pretty big leap from the Dx30, I'd assume the upcoming Latitude refresh won't bring much besides new internals... much like the jump from the Dx20 to Dx30 machines.

I heard something like this a couple weeks ago. But it was due to inventory being very high for "older" chips.

Yes. Apparently, Intel is making chips faster than PC makers can sell them (recession, anyone?). The "older" chips are still Penryn/Montevina.
