Is the M4400 really that bad?

If its a lot cheaper than the HP, you definately made the right choice Its a great machine and you will be happy with it :)

There may be some problems, but they should be solvable; just remember that every laptop model has some issues, HP elitebooks, macbook pros, dell precisions ..:D

Thanks wearetheborg! In the end, the Dell was a lot cheaper than the HP system (almost 20% difference). Even after I upgrade the RAM and HDD, I'll still have saved a fair amount and ended up with a better spec'd system overall.

I still rate the HP, though, and I think its casing is nicer and more robust. But you're right, every system can have problems, but so far I've been quite lucky with my laptops (either that or I'm less sensitive to any imperfections).

Yeah, and plus you get the WUXGA, and the backlit keyboard.
Since you seem value concious, I'd recommend upgrading the RAM, but wait as long as possible to get the SSD as prices will keep falling :)

I just saw this post now.
I have not had any issues on my M4400 and other than it being a little heavy (the E6500 i had was as bad) it is a great notebook.

    My setup is as follows.
    CPU: T9800
    HD: WD 320 Black
    Ram: 8 gigs
    Screen: RGB-LED

Extras: fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard (I will not have a notebook without it now) 64 bit Vista, web cam, intel 5300 card etc.

I do not find the glossy screen a bother at all. I have used HP screens as well as Dell and Apple glossy screens and i find the M4400 more of a Semi gloss screen. Crisper than matte, but not nearly as bad as full glossy, unlike the others.

I used mine in a florescent lit room, at the pool when i was in Aruba, at the local coffee shot, etc without a problem, well other than people going WOW what a nice screen.

    Congrats on your new lappy!
When it arrives and you're installing win7 be sure to have a look at the Dell site for how too install the drivers. They have to be installed in a particular order to prevent possible issues

    here's the link:
    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/driver_install_order?~lt=print'

I'd download all the drivers in advance (get the Vista versions for everything) and just number them in this order. If a driver won't run for some reason try right-clicking the driver installer (the already unpacked one preferrably) and go to compatibility and set it to Vista, running it as administrator also helps.

    Hope you'll enjoy it!

I ordered a M4400 yesterday, I may not get it due to the tiny hard drive I ordered on backorder. I also only got 1GB RAM from Dell with the intention on upgrading those items myself. I tried to get it without a hard drive or memory knowing that wasn't an option.

    Congrats here is my spec:
