What exactly does a chassis consist of ?
Is the LCD cover part of the chassis ?

The bottom cover (above the RAM slots) seemed like plastic to me.

Thanks. It seems like only the "edges" are Al, rest is plastic.
The display lid I'm still unsure whether its metal or not.

EDIT: I checked again, the lid IS most definately metal :)

The chassis is very likely mostly the same magnesium-alloy they use in more or less every Dell laptop with an aluminum finish. I actually bet it's the same with the lid, metal frame and aluminum finish. I imagine it's just not practical to use an all aluminum chassis... unless you're Apple, of course.

I understand that its a relative of the E6500 I have which has a metal-look plastic LCD case.

I think it would have to be plastic because its full of antennas for the wifi and 3g radios.

Dell says its metal, and it feels like metal to touch (conducts heat very well).

Having a metal lid is nothing new, the thinkpads have had them for a while (the T4x series). Also in the M6400, there is a plastic strip at the end of the lid, maybe thats where the antenna is
