    Hello all,

As the title says really. I can't seem to find out if the screen is Matte or Glossy?
From what I've been reading the screen in the covert is way too glossy so I want a Matte screen, but still LED.

    Regards,
    Simon

I know the LED WXGA+ screen on the E6500 is matte, it should be the same for the E6400.

The Covet screen is covered with a piece of glass that stretches edge to edge therefore having no plastic bezel around the screen. Like any glass, it is glossy. The screen is very bright and beautiful and I do not find this to be a problem in any way. I do not notice it when working on my computer at home or at work.

There is a lot of speculation on here about the issue of it being a "matte" screen underneath the glass.
I find this puzzling though, cause to me, isnt any screen just whatever the light source is and if its a gloss screen then it has some sort of clear cover over it which could be glass, or some sort of plastic.
I lot of people on here are saying how dissapointing that the glossy screen is just glass over a matte screen, but isnt any gloss screen just lights with either a polished shiny finish on the outside cover or not? I guess you feel its "doubling up" so then you get the negative effects of a matte screen with gloss on top of that, rather than gloss without the matte screen effects??

But is ANYONE really seeing the Covet screen as one that LOOKS like a matte screen (with negative "matte screen" effects) with a shiny coating.
I mean the screen is just beautiful compared to any screens I see it next to (and Ive seen it next to about 4 different laptops now).
So what difference does it make how its put together, and how ELSE should it be put together???? Maybe a gloss screen, with a piece of glass to go edge to edge would look worse with 2 glossy surfaces under there reflecting things at 2 levels??
Am I making any sense here?

    its late.

My issues aren't with how it's made, it's with how much reflection is on the thing.. Of course I haven't seen the screen so I can't say really. Some people have said it's so reflective it's almost distracting. Others seem to think it's perfectly fine.

It's so hard to judge these things without seeing it in action I guess.

    Regards,
    Simon

well, you really do just need to see it yourself. We ALL have different opinions on all SORTS of aspects of everything.

This is the huge problem with not being able to see laptops we buy in person first. I mean WHAT else do people buy for so much money sight unseen?

But to me, I have gone from matte to glossy and it is just NOT an issue on this screen at all.
Maybe if you have a bunch of bright lights right behind you or something, but still.......

havent we all been watching televisions for YEARS that have a glass screen?????
and even worse, a glass OUTWARD-CURVED screen which reflected even MORE lights than a flat screen would like on a laptop. Somehow for years, everyone in their houses have been ok with this watching things very intently.

Ive been thinking the same thing about tvs yeah. Everyone dims the lights for a movie, common knowledge, but having to turn off the lamp behind your shoulder when on a laptop, thats beyond the pale? Hell we used to stand up on our desks and unscrew the fluorescent lights in the ceiling at the office when we were doing web design, and that was back in the day with big Sony CRTs. I dunno don't most decent offices have those diffusers that make the light spread softer anyway? Maybe not but I don't see it being some big issue. I think the 17" size is more of an issue, keeps me from using it on the plane, and that big power supply is an issue too, but worth putting up with.

Yeah just seeing it in person you'll forget the minutia & specifics, it just pokes you in the eyes with color, and I think its the brightest screen I've seen on a laptop too.

True. When I'm using it in low lighting conditions I *have* to put it on the lowest brightness, or it starts to sear my eyeballs! :D

The screen is not bad at all. I just wonder why they didn't take the chance to get the best contrast possible. I compared the MacBook Pro screen (glass Edge2Edge over a glossy screen) against the M6400 Edge2Edge and the matte M4400 screen. The glass plate brings no improvements. You can easily see that the matte screen has a worse contrast, because the light from the screen itselfs diffuses --> black looks kind of grey. Even the matte M4400 LED screen has a better contrasts without reflections!

    That's why I'm complaining.

My M1730 has a glossy screen, which is supposed to help contrast, and the blacks are relatively poor on it although slightly better than my M90s matte screen. The M6400's screen is better in terms of black performance, though not by a huge margin. I don't think any Dell i've ever had has had very good black level performance, although the E2E I have is the best so far.

Any update on when you get the matte RGB LED though? We won't get a true picture until we see them side by side. Incidentally, what are your brightness, contrast and gamma set at?

EDIT: Oh, if there happen to be any M6400 RGB LED (non E2E) owners in London I'd be willing to meet up to compare and contrast.
