Just got my E6400 from Dell Outlet today and i noticed it's running noticeably hot. I've read some of the posts on the nvidia overheating problem so I decided to run the same tests other people did. The screenshot is after running 3DMark2006 on Balanced power setting. Are those temps ok? I talked to a rep who acknowledged the potential problem with the nvidia chipset and said if i send this to the depot now they can take a look at the mobo, cpu and gpu and have it back to me in less than 10 regular days. Since I have finals coming up, I'd much rather not send it in unless they offer me onsite or some potential freebies, which the rep refused to. So any suggestion would be much appreciated. Should I run some more tests? And if so, which?

81C max on the GPU is great, really. There have been reports of the Nvidia GPU running up to 100C on some machines (my first one included). 50C to 60C max on the CPU is fairly typical. So no, I don't think you've got a problem.

    I second the Commander's opinion. ;)

My GPU hits a maximum temperature of 83C, so yours is fine.

Those tests don't fully stress the CPU and GPU. For a real estimate of the highest your CPU/GPU will go, use Furmark for the GPU and Orthos for the CPU. As long as your GPU doesn't go past 90C with Furmark and your CPU 75C, you don't have a problem (Orthos and Furmark stress your GPU and CPU more than real applications will).

Does Furmark terminate itself? It went on for a while so I was impatient and shut it down (~15 minutes), at which point the max temp was 78. I ran another racing game with mild graphics (Trackmania) and the temp shot up to 82 or so.

You seem to have a good Nvidia E6400. Congratulations! :)

Odd, my max GPU temps have always been with Furmark. And no, it doesn't terminate itself - it's a stability test. It'll keep going until you are satisfied with your graphics card stability.

That's most likely overheating. However, when I reported temperatures do Dell, they asked whether I had "actual issues" with the GPU. Since I have some automatic downclocks from the GPU, they have acknowledged that there is something wrong, but to you they might just say "it is within normal parameters". Unfortunately Nvidia does not release "safe" temperature ranges.

I also have quite high GPU temps, so im following the temps and cooling threads . When gaming I sometimes reach 100C. (HWmonitor and l8kfan) But I havent noticed any clockdowns. Im idling at 55-60C. CPU and chipset is always noticable lower.

One other thing, i recently noticed that when starting from sleep mode my GPU is already at 45-50C (CPU and chipset about 25C) Could there be just some sensor problems on the GPUs?
