I want to buy a precision & latitude notebook, and I would like to know, if there is a way to control fan speeds.
I red that fans are pulsating/turning on-off all the time and that is very annoying. My lenovo does the same, but I bypassed that by TPfanControl utility. Thanks

    Hi,

As per the system design there is no manual option to control the fan speed. You may be able to find some third party utility to do so. Any damage caused due to third party utility is not covered under the warranty, so you would be using it at your own risk.

    Thanks & Regards

i8kfangui worked up through the M6300, but anything newer and you're out of luck. SpeedFan is supposed to work on some Dell models, but I don't know if any of the newer Precisions are among those models. This is, sadly, one of the reasons I'm still with TP right now.

Current version of SpeedFan doesn't see any fans on the M6700.

Fans on the M6700 don't bug me that much but they stay on more than I expected. Anyway, the most annoying thing is that they kick up high when they first turn on, and then slow down (less than a second later), so you can really hear when the fans kick on. Anyway, after a few weeks, I'm used to it.

The fan profile seem to be the same for different GPU, I think it is over aggressive for my m8900.(though probably practical for optimus machines) I think the slowdown threshold after spin up is 50C, which isn't really practical for a 75-100W GPU. However if I change the power profile under 60(iirc), doing this will restart the fan profile and the fan will spin down.
Spin up ~ 70C on dGPU.

The fan profile (such as "quiet", "cool" etc) from Dell seem to have different tipping point, but they have the same symptom trying to cool the dGPU down to 50C after spin up.

I don't know if it's due to the 6700 being faster than the 6600 or other design improvements, but I know I really never notice the fans running on the 6700, and I did notice them frequently on the 6600.

well if fans are running constantly, that is no problem for me, but I hate when they are turning on and off again and again all the time, that is very annoying (when idle or easy work). How is M6700 on this on/off issue?

    Hi,

The M6700 is a fairly heavy duty machine with pretty robust configurations. Depending on the workload, the fan will turn ON/Off as controlled by the thermistor/thermostat on the motherboard.

On light workloads (Internet, Ms Office), my M6700 is practically silent, i do hear the fan rev up once in a while, but never for long and not often either. It would be nice to be able to set different fan profiles (provided there are safeties in place regarding thermals) depending on what you do.

thanks guys. I just wonder "how hard can it be" to control them, or at lest force them not to turn off.
