I just recently bought an Intel SSD 160g G2 for my M6400.

So far using HDTune and other tools to perform read/write test, I have been getting very low performance than the actual average speed from Intel.

My m6400 is a QX9300, 8GB ram, using AHCI with the latest Intel drivers and tools.

All the tools show my avg read speed is around 170mb/sec. Is this a hardware limitation from the laptop or could my ssd be faulty?

    Thanks in advance.

Try using CrystalDiskMark and post up what you get for the 100MB and 1000MB file sizes.

Here is the results, a bit higher read and write scores compared to the other tools.

Those speeds seem fairly good and on par with results I've seen (though random R/W might be a tad on the low side). If you want to compare your results, check out the hardware subforum and skim the SSD thread or post there to see what other G2 users think.
