Intel 5300 does not work in Dell D820?

    I have seen posts around the net that the Intel 5300 (mini PCI-e) will work in the D820.

    So I put one in...and no dice. While is is recognized by the system (driver installs, etc.) it does not actually work. Won't communicate, find access points, etc.

    Can anyone actually verify it works properly in a D820. If there something special to be done?

    Also asking what working 802.11n card do people have in the D820s?

    I know the intel 4965agn works in the D820s

    Yes, the previous generation does, but I wanted the higher throughput, plus Intel My Wifi for creating WiFi PANs is nifty.

    It's either Dell 1505, or the 4965AGN, so I'm going with the 1505 and seeing how that works. (The 1490 works fine on 802.11n, just capped at 54Mbs.

    That's roughly 2.5MB/sec when copying files, and it's painful. Get a "real 802.11n" card, and you can do 300Mbs, which give about 10MB/sec for file xfers, which is a lot easier to live with.

    I guess I should just buy a new laptop, but the D820 is solid, speedy, and expandable.

    not sure what you mean by higher throughput.

    My 4965AGN and 5300 both connect at 300mbps to my router, and both can get about 40mbps (5MB/sec) of actual data throughput using wpa2 encryption.

    I've never seen any card come close to utilizing the 300mbps bandwidth with encryption turned on.

    The current card I have is a Dell 1490. It is b/g/a (a=n), but it can only do 54Mbs on the a/n side. You are correct the Intel 4965AGN and 5300 are speced to 300Mbs. The 5300 has My Wifi (Wifi PAN), which is slick because you can maintain your regular internet connection, and do a separate wifi pan for local devices.

    So if I go to the Dell 1505 or Intel 4965, I can get "full"/higher throughput 802.11n. Sadly, the Intel 5300 doesn't work - I think there something inherent to the motherboard/chipset.

    I love "standards" - mini PCI-e should be the same across platforms, yet it's not. Grrr.

    In reality, my router can only do 280Mbs max. I usually connect at 270Mbs when I am right next to it, and it drops off as I move away, but still is 4x faster than the comparable "g" devices.

    I'm surprised you only get 5MB. I have WPA2, and get 10MB when I am in the same room as the router. (on 5ghz band)

    Which router are you using?

    Just closing the loop. Got a Dell 1505 card, installed in D820 with Windows 7.

    Said it couldn't find the driver, but then stated working a few minutes later...must have found it 270Mbs.

    After Windows update ran, it found a more recent Broadcom driver. I installed that, and it was 54Mbs, no higher. Grrr.

    Go the latest driver from the Dell site, and viola, back to 270Mbs on 802.11n. When I am on the other side of the house, it drops to 108Mbs, but still all good in the hood.

    Transfers are around 9MBs when I am in same room as router...not quite the 10MBs with the Intel 5300; I think the 3rd antenna and better chipset boosts it a bit.

    Happy camper now.
