I just received an e6400 this last week. I had read about the fact that the speakers are only tweeters but the sound from this thing is awful.

We're replacing a Compaq V5000 due to needing a faster laptop and the Compaq's audio quality blows this away.

If I never planned on listening to music was on the laptop, I'd probably overlook this deficiency but I guess it's going back to Dell this week.

Now I'm back to square one.

Laptop speakers should never be used for anything more than an instant messenger beep or something little like that. Get real computer speakers with a sub woffer and plug them into your laptop.

Are you seriously returning a laptop because of bad speakers? For me thats the least important part of a lappy because i never use them anyway, i haven't heard a single laptop with good enough sound so i don't expect anything. Have to say i'm quite picky when it comes to sound though ;)

Yeah, I know I must be one of the few who actually cares about sound quality. That's why I have always had an audiophile-quality home system and have little interest in buying a computer speakers and a subwoofer for a laptop.

In the home, I just stream all my music with a Logitech Squeezebox Duet.

When I'm out and about or want to listen to quick clips or music, I use the laptop.

Sorry, the Altec Lansings in the Compaq are easy on the ears in comparison to the nails-on-the-chalkboard sound from the Dell.

Needless to say, everyone has different expectations from the sound quality of their laptop and Dell probably knows that the majority of their business market could careless about that.

Perhaps I'm being too picky. I'll give it more time because it's the only thing I dislike about the e6400.

Taylormade, yes, I agree with you that the sounds quality of the E6400 (and M2400 for that matter) is below average, however, most people will usually use a pair of headphone or speakers if they require better audio quality.

If you insist on returning your E6400, you could give the Asus N80 series a try, as that will have Altec Lancing speakers and produce less trebley sounds. However, if you're looking for a laptop with built-in bass, you'll probably have to opt for a 16" or larger system. Some of the Sonys and Asus offers this feature.

No...thats exactly what i mean, i care a LOT about audio quality. Thats why i have a 1000euro Genelec monitor set hanging left and right from my screen ;)
I just don't expect ANY laptop speaker to be good enough to listen to so i don't care much if these are particularly crappy. For the same reason i wouldn't use a built in audio card for production.

im having same issue. the sound on my E6400 has, at full throttle, maybe 1/2 the volume of my old D505. it is really disappointing in comparison. and, it seems that they may have used the same speakers for the entire E series and Precisions series. i may be back at square one as well.

I concur with everyone, they SUCK! However, with my Sony headphones, it sounds pretty decent. I'd go with some kind of headphones/external speakers. After all, this is a "business" laptop and the priority here isn't multimedia entertainment. That would be more of a Studio or XPS feature.

Yeah, in general the sound levels of this computer are lower than my other computers. Doesn't really bother me though

Being a DJ, I do care about sound quality, too. That's why I use an Echo Audiofire2 FW soundcard with AKG K181 headphones ...
