Recently my laptop's desktop and icons have started to flash randomly, things like the sound icon has a x on it.A couple of days a ago avast warned me about a win32:trojan(other) in 2 places.I looked at dell's instruction to replce the gpu but i think it would be to hard for me to do and my warranty is over.

This all started after using a program that was made for win vista only.

GPU failure (if it is the nVidia GPU) usually causes the image on the display to break up (some parts OK and some parts are bad).

I think you have a software problem.

Can you restore your computer to an earlier date?

You could try running off a Linux Live CD (eg Ubuntu).

If the graphics behave themselves then it would provide more evidence that there is something wrong with your Windows.
