I tried upgrading my seagate hdd driver with the new ones from dell, but i dont know if it worked. i burned the iso to a cd-r, and booted up with it. it did some stuff and then said press any key to continue.

i pressed a key to continue.

it say <C>:\\ or something like that and then nothing worked. i tried typing exit but no dice. so i just pressed the power button and turned it off and then on.

i have no idea if it worked or not though. i think it did though.

    thanks

Download HD-Tune and check the firware revision of the drive and the firmware that you were trying to upgrade. If they are the same, then the upgrade worked.

However, I wouldn't recommend updating the firmware unless there is something wrong with the drive. There are many horror stories floating around that could have been avoided if people weren't meddling with things that didn't need fixing.

the seagate firmware is a recommended upgrade, because it supposedly solves the horrible clicking noise thats really very loud.

they recently released a new revision a few days ago.

what you do is you have to burn the image to cd/DVD, so you need to use software that can read the image, not just copy the file straight to DVD.

call up dell and they'll walk you thru the process.

i did burn the iso to the disc, not just the files straight to the disc. i just thought it odd that itd go to the C:\\

and thanks, HD tune shows that it indeed worked--firmware version DE17.

And i upgraded because it was recommended, and it was supposed to get rid of the clicking, just like afhstingray said. :D

well im pretty sure it didnt fix it much, if at all. it may be too soon to tell though. :(

its never really bothered me. i may try the hdparm method later.

all i know is that i dont like this drive because its LOUD! i hear the HD spinning (i8kfangui reports 0rpm on my fan), it sounds like a friggin fan!

    i may upgrade later.

was your unit made in malaysia? my first one came frm malaysia, the others from ireland, because im in the UK now, the original unit i purchased in malaysia.

the brand new replacement sent to me was while i was in the UK, so it came frm ireland. seems like the malaysian factory has the samsung drives, and the ireland one has the seagates.

the clicking bothered me because vista does a lot of stuff while the computer is idle that results in hard drive activity....and i sleep with mine on. also it was distracting when im reading etc. good thing i kept the samsung!

im planning to upgrade to a 500gb drive when they become cheaper lol.

when i found out i had a samsung drive i was disappointed, because i dint think they were any good. but after this, samsung is definitely on my recommended list.

well this is silly...now i feel like i hear a slight whine from the harddrive. its never made it before and the fans definitely arent on, so i figure its not cpu and definitely not fan.
