On my company Latitude D600 I would like to get a seperate hard drive so I can surf download, etc. without company oversight. That being said I have a rough idea how to do it. But want to make sure I dont miss anything. Is it as easy as purchasing another internal hard drive and an OS. Or is there another way. Would like to do this on the cheap.

Go onto eBay, and buy one of those Media Bay hard drive modules. With an 80 gb hard drive, shouldn't cost you more than a hundred bucks or so.

Then just plug the drive in whenever you feel the need to use the drive. And when you're done with your 'personal' stuff, just unplug the drive and replace it with the CD-ROM.

I'm pretty sure you can configure it to boot from the media bay drive instead of the main system drive.

Here's an eBay auction for what you're looking for:

You should be able to install XP using the license code that is on the sticker affixed to the laptop. You'll have to do a bit of a swap-er-roo with drives to install XP from a CD, but sounds like it's worth your while.

USB external hard drive. WD Passport is an example of one.

Or you could go for a D/Bay drive, but then you have no optical drive.
