Posted yesterday about not being able to find parts for a Dell Latitude 540/640. I tried to get the old one out so I can see the model/part number. I got everything off down to the inverter and this metal guard that is on top of it.

The manual I was looking at for instruction didn't show this metal guard. There aren't any more screws to take out. I can't find a way to get the inverter out!
I know that I will need to unplug it but that isn't what is holding it in.

    Help!

The metal bracket at the bottom may have one small screw that basically sandwiches the inverter into the bracket. On some versions, there will be an adhesive strip on the back of the inverter. In either case, once you have unfastened the inverter, you usually have to gently bend the metal bracket outward (in direction of screen front) to free it from a small lip in the bracket.

Many Dell models from the past few years have the inverter and LCD categorized as one assembly and Dell never sold the inverter by itself. Sometimes the best way to get an inverter for one of these models is to buy a broken screen that still has it attached. Another thing that you occasionally run into with Dells is that an inverter may look exactly the same as another and work fine, but the brightness up/down function will be backwards.

    Good luck!
