Did they just randomly splice cables together? Magically transforming a purely digital feed (HDMI) to a purely analog one (composite) in a cable? Or am I missing something?

Latitude E has DP, if the TV is HDMI then a DP-to-HDMI would work.

There is no displayPort output on your E4200. You have to get the E-dock or the E-dock Plus. On other E models, there is a displayPort, and all you need is a cable adaptor.
