Hi I'm debating between these two models when they come out. Pretty much the way I see it right now is that if the XPS 15 doesn't have throttling or heat issues then that's what i'm getting.

I know its stated many times that Precision work station machines are on a different level, but an XPS with i7 4700, Geforce 750m DDR5, and a 512GB SSD, QHD+ display, sounds very comparable to the M4800 specs, with half the size and weight.

Am I missing something that makes the Precision a no brainer for business?
I use solidworks, pcb and other CAD programs but I don't think the Quadro K2100m will be significantly better than the Geforce 750m.

Also M3800 looks pretty much the same as an XPS but with a Quadro, and I don't want to wait any longer.

A docking station would be nice on an XPS though.

    Appreciate your help and input.
    Thanks,
    Omer

The Precision comes with 3 year warranty whereas XPS comes with only 1 year warranty. Once you add 3 year warranty to Dell's consumer laptops, Precisions are actually pretty good deals.

I would actually expect the XPS 15 to be very expensive if you want the 9-cell 512 GB SSD option. It is probably cheaper to buy the $1989 M4800 and installing your own SSD.

In addition to the warranty and probably better cooling there are these possible advantages:
    Optical Drive
    Better processor (MQ4800 vs 4702HQ)
    Option for mobile broadband
    Better repairability/upgradability
    Trackpointer
    Much higher maximum storage capacity
    Matte display
    Keyboard
    Docking station
    Connectivity

You can't really compare business class to high end consumer class. Warranty alone is already a better option to pick the Precision (on site, accidental damage, Dell Pro Support, etc). That and it's better built, ISV certifications, Quadro/FirePro options, the list goes on. Stick with business.

Thanks, this is just making my decision more difficult unfortunately because the size and weight of the XPS is very attractive.

Well the Precision M3800 is supposed to be a XPS15 clone (except for the Quadro GPU) but with Precision support. Once the XPS15 is available I'd expect the M3800 to follow promptly. I am myself torn between the M3800 and the M4800 but would like to see price info on the M3800 before jumping.

I also thought about the M3800 but the GPU is a K1100M, and it will only come out in November. I can't see how they'll be very different except maybe for the docking station and GPU. Besides you can always extend your warranty with an XPS.

I don't think there will be much of a difference between an i7-4700 and i7-4900.
