I ordered my Vostro 1710 with the top spec including 8600 GT. After 4 days of endless talks with Dell people (the notebooks was delivered with 8600 GS), they confirmed that it was a misprint on their site and Vostro 1710 comes with 8600 GS only.

Still I can see they advertise GT on all of their sites worldwide. Here comes the question: who lies and where? Either they make false advertising and mislead customers or their support lies to me stating that Vostro 1710 with GT is not existing.

Guys, has someone ever seen Vostro 1710 with GT live?

I've never seen any evidence that an 8600GT equipped 1710 exists. My hunch is they just did a global edit in the specifications of 1700 to 1710, swapped in the new pics, changed a couple of obvious details and didn't proof read the result.

I've been looking at the (crappy) service manual for the 1710. There's no mention of a seperate graphics assembly which implies that the cards are soldered in. Maybe.... It's completely different to the 1700.

There seems to be a move away from putting higher spec cards like the GT in basic machines like the Vostro to make us spend lots more on Precisions.

A bit off topic, but I literally got one of the last Vostro 1500's with an 8600M GT. I ordered it near the end of May, and the option was gone before my system shipped a week later. It looks like they want to limit the graphics options on the Vostro line.

Same situation here in Canada, the GS. Since the GT is even on the paperwork I received, I'm not exactly sure how they could get by with any excuse, but then I haven't contacted them yet about it.

Is it really soldered in? I'll have to check that, but I hope not.

I'm no expert on this, but is this thing clocked correctly? It seems low even for a laptop.

The clocks are normal. The card doesn't run at full speed unless you're doing 3D stuff like gaming.

Yesterday Dell changed the spec on all of their sites and now Vostro 1710 comes with 8600 GS only
