Has anyone replaced the thermal paste / thermal pad on a E6400/M2400?

    Hi folks,

I have come to grips with the fact that my E6400 (see specs below) has idle temps of around 42 for both CPUs and around 62 for the GPU (while docked). While these are not dangerous, and while the slow fan speed is very quiet and therefore doesn't bother me, I refuse to accept defeat so easily.

So, I am thinking of replacing the thermal paste and possibly the thermal pad on my E6400. There is at least one person here at the Latitude/Precision sub-forum who did that, with amazing results.

Hence my question: has anyone tried replacing the thermal paste on the E6400? What about the thermal pad, did you keep it or replaced it with a thick layer of thermal paste? Which paste did you use?

Thanks in advance for any input!

I've got a thin layer of AS5 on my CPU, but I've still got the thermal pad on my northbridge. I didn't do any apples-to-apples before and after tests, but honestly I don't feel like it made too much of a difference. I may try copper-modding the NB if we don't get an A13 BIOS with updated thermal tables (a la M4400).

Idle temps hover around 36 and 40 for cores 0 and 1 and about 46 for the NB. I wish I could measure my ambient temperature, but all I can say is that it's been pretty warm these past few days. I'm sweating a little sitting on my bed with a laptop on my lap.

Is the NB the "ACPI" you get when you use CPUID HWmonitor on the E6400?

My CPU temperatures on idle are about there as well. The ACPI temperature is around 53-55 on idle, which seems normal to me since I have a more powerful GPU.

See my attachment. THM is the NB (I'm fairly certain) on my current E6400; I don't recall what it is was on my Nvidia machine. It may or may not have been the same...
