I bought the vostro 1400 a little over a year ago (warranty expired now) and first there was that g84 gpu problem, and now the hdd toshiba mk1237gsx) has died on me. It's pretty uncommon that it dies in a year and 2 months right? Has anybody else had this problem, or is it just me?

Dell isn't willing to help me at all. I've done some research, ran some diagnostic tests, and some short and long tests failed. I've tried getting a 2.5" enclosure, putting it in there, but the BIOS won't recognize the drive.(although I hear the normal consistent spinning sound of the platters)

Does anyone have any other suggestions to try and recover the data in it?

That is premature, but that's the reason there is warranty. It isn't a widespread problem, so there isn't any special warranty extension for that.

Luckily harddrives aren't terribly expensive to replace. You need a 2.5 inch SATA drive.

Yea I'm not worried about the cost of replacement, I've already got that taken care of. I just want to see if anybody knows how to recover data from the old hdd.
