    Hi.
I was working with my laptop and for some time it started making a wierd noice.
when the laptop's fans were not running, like at startup when the laptop is still cool, i heard it too.
it doesn't make this sound all the time, when it makes that sound its not loading or something, the hard drive light is not flickering.

I uploaded the sound here, you need to listen very good and put your sound loud to hear it.
    what do you think?

    Specs:
    Dell latitude d630
    3 gb RAM
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2ghz
Intel X3100 64 mb Integrated graphics.
ST980813ASG 70 GB hard drive. (seagate i think)
Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit.

What do your SMART indicators say, if anything?

it sais no errors found in any subject.
when i press details it marks the all the good thinks with a green OKAY
things that are not the best, a yellow OK
    an orange WARNING
    and a red CRITICAL

    all are OKAY.

still my drive makes noice. today i put it into another laptop, and confirmed it was the hard drive.

i just looked up for some software and saw HDtune, it seems a better software then the integrated one in my hardware-test kit.
should i scan again with that one?

That's a very old drive. Yeah the clicking could sign for coming death.

Make sure to back up everything, have OS ready to reinstall if one day it stops working entirely. Even if SMART doesn't give you errors, old drives will fail anyways.

    Happened twice.

My experiance is the clicking sounds from the hard drive = mechanical failure is close

As others have said, best to take the pro-active approach and replace the drive while you can still get your files off it.

    its not clicking.
its not the famous click of death.
the hard drive still works good.

its a bit fuzzy, sounds like you put a piece off paper in a fan.
but its not the fan, i tested it, i cleaned out the fans and tested the hard drive in another laptop.

    its absolutely not clicking.
i have no performance problems too.

I know what you mean by sound like paper in a fan. like a electricity buzzing zzzz zz zzzzzzzzzz zzz zzz zzzzzz.

Right? That still looks like mechanical problem to me.

The reality is, if your HDD came with your laptop, your HDD is only so old and ready to really retire. There is nothing you can do to fix the drive, but to back it up and prepare for the worst.

As a reminder, DO NOT OPEN YOUR DRIVE. You will instantly kill it, due to pressure difference.

Ok. I dont know or the drive came with the laptop, as it is refurbished from an office,
i know i shouldnt open a hard drive.

that im new at this forum doesn't mean im new to computers ;)

i already have a backup up my hard drive. (always :))

its just so weird i never heard this sound before.
i had clicking drives, siren drives, drives that played a little song, scratching drives, beeping drives, but never a buzzing drive

i do not have any other symptons of failing, its just like normal.
well yeah, the laptop is old already, i'll just wait for this drive to fail, as it does no longer have any important data, i already backuped everything a few days ago.
when the drive fails i'll buy a new.
