Getting a P5000 to work in a machine this old is seriously bad*ss...now I'm tempted to go that route instead of the 980m

EDIT: Maybe not - is it still true that Pascal only works properly with the LVDS display? I have eDP...

Backwards. Pascal only works with eDP display. It will work with either type if you have Optimus turned on.

There is a 5.414 for Linux at the top of the main page, you don't have to click "show old versions" to find it.

I think I bid against you on that one haha!

Has anyone tried a 1070? I wonder if a vbios flash would be required for that one. I didn’t think there were any standard MXM B 1070s out there but a quick eBay search showed otherwise.

There is a lot of discussion about the 1070 earlier in this thread and also this one:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/trials-and-tribulations-installing-a-1070-in-a-m6800.828000/
You are fine if you use Linux; for Windows it will BSOD at boot, like any other Pascal card does. The only card that we have a working vBIOS for is the P5000. There is no vBIOS to flash to the 1070 so the workaround for the moment is rather tricky (see linked thread).

I recommend that you use the "make an offer" feature on eBay for some of the non-auction P5000 cards. I got one for a bit over half of the apparent market rate after a few tries (more expensive than a 1070 card but not by much)... I remember being a bit shocked when my offer came back accepted :p

only one went today so I'm sure you did. And I really wonder if the p5000 rom we have would work against the 1070.....the cards are so very similar

This has been tried already, you can read about it further up in this thread. (Quick answer: worked for first boot only.)

Gotta be careful when willy-nilly flashing vBIOSes. You can easily put the card in a state where it is non-functional and you can't get the system to boot up in order to flash another vBIOS. (You can also read about this, back in the thread.)

I have a hackintosh setup. Mine uses various files to ignore the Nvidia card and use the HD 4600 . I'me probably going to find out (when the time comes) if it will boot into that and I can flash from there. I would also suggest the dsdt implementation possible there as a potential tool for 1070 implementation. I know, for example, there are already (albeit for os x) premade dsdt files for the 1070 for clover. And finally I would suggest it is possible if you just used MacOs to operate that way and not do anything else

Thanks for all the insight Aaron44126. For me it's a tough choice between the expensive P5000 and the much cheaper, more plug and play, and less powerful (and possibly much hotter?) 980m. Notebookcheck and other sites say that the 980m draws a little over 100w, while the p5000 draws less than 100w. Is this true?
