Graphics Card upgrade for M6800 ?

I have a m3000m in my m6800, suree would like to know what the best card avialiable I can put in mine is. I am running ubuntu gnome

 

Pascal cards are not working in this model, so the best that you can get is a GeForce 980M or Quadro M5000M.

I'm getting closer to upgrade my card. I did some other upgrades in the meantime: M.2 SSD, doubled RAM (Crucial), replaced my screen (Innolux N173HGE-L11)... I've been looking at Eurocom and they seem a bit spicy in prices for M6800. Also on Ebay 980M listed for Clevo or Alienware seem cheaper than for M6800. Is it because of the brackets and screws only? Do there is any other incompatibility that would prevent another 980M to run on Dell Precision M6800? I know there are 2 sizes of 980M, but I am talking about the one "full size".

An Alienware 980M should work fine. You will have to transfer the X-bracket off of your old GPU (must be an NVIDIA GPU, I think AMD brackets are slightly different). The bracket can be difficult to remove, you may have to use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat it up so that the glue will come loose. (Of course, you will also have to modify the NVIDIA driver INF file to get the driver to install, that's going to be the case no matter where you get the card from.)

 

So, any GTX 980M MXM card (full size) should be compatible as long as the x-bracket and the inf file are set right? Yes, I was reading that the x-bracket is glued on the card and should be heated-off. But I assume the hole positions should be identical, right? Only the screw thread size should cause issues. Because if there are several 980M cards with different hole positions, that would limit compatibility.

 

Any "standard size" GeForce 980M should fit. The position of the screw holes is part of the standard. You are correct, the screw thread size is what makes the X-bracket swap necessary. Another thing to worry about would be if the position of the VRMs at the top of the card are different... Some heatsinks have slight protrusions that could make a fit impossible if actual components on the MXM card are in different positions. (The positions of components on the card is not part of the MXM standard.) I'm pretty sure that all "standard" 980Ms are laid out in the same way.

I've seen confirmation of Alienware 980M working but I haven't seen confirmation of Clevo. I would say that a Clevo card would "probably" work, but it probably has a different vBIOS so that can't be taken as a certainty unless someone has tried it.
