I have a Latitude D530 company computer. Unfortunately, it only supports 1024 x 768 screen resolution for the unit's display. The graphics chipset is the Mobile Intel 965 Express family.

My question is this: If I was to get an external larger resolution display - say a display with 1680 x 1050 resolution - can the graphics chipset support this higher resolution and different screen ratio?

Is it a matter of the chipset, or the drivers that come with the display?

    Thanks ahead...

Yes, it should work without issue.

Hi Ned, and welcome to the forums!
It's actually the graphics card that controls the display resolution. The Intel 965 is actually the motherboard chipset, not the GPU.
Assuming you have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, the D530 will be fully capable of displaying up to 1080p (1920x1200) so a 1680x1050 resolution shouldn't be a problem for your laptop.
