    M6400 specs - running Vista 64bit, qx9300, fx2700m, 16GB ram, 500Gb raid0 array in the laptop all on a 1Gbps network.

If I am copying a large file (40Gb or so) either to or from my workstation across the network then, depending on which server I'm copying to, I get around 50% of network utilisation. If I start another copy to another server then network utilisation goes up even further as expected.

However, if I do *anything* with windows media player (and also I confirmed that using VLC player does the same thing) then the network traffic drops to 6% - even if I am just playing a DVD/CD locally.

I've tinkered with the QoS settings in group policy - to no avail, I've also disabled the QoS in the network adapter itself - but it still happens.

    Any ideas?
