I'm hoping you guys can share some real world data regarding the gaming performance of different video cards used in mobile workstations. I have looked over just about every post in the M6700 owners thread and Bokeh's excellent review but couldn't find any real world gaming results measured in frames per second. Notebookcheck.net has some info on the M4700's graphics cards but there is pretty much nothing anywhere else on the internet. There is also only limited data available regarding the gaming counterparts to the professional cards in the M6700. Even if there was data, a lot of people note the gaming performance penalty of having drivers optimized for professional applications with the Firepro and Quadro. So all of that said...

Anyone care to share their frames per second with the following video cards and games? Just one game result is fine (but the more the merrier) and a range for the FPS is also fine. Please also make sure to note your settings. Please also feel free to add cards or games to the list below:

    • AMD FirePro M6000 Mobility Pro with 2GB GDDR5
    • NVIDIA Quadro K3000M with 2GB GDDR5
    • NVIDIA Quadro K4000M with 4GB GDDR5
    • NVIDIA Quadro K5000M with 4GB GDDR5
    • Battlefield 3
    • Crysis 2
    • Dishonored
    • Max Payne 3
    • Diablo 3
    • CoD 3: Modern Warefare
    • Starcraft 2
I want a Precision for the RGB IPS, docking abilities, great warranty, durability and of course upgrade-ability. I am a graphic designer, coder etc and don't really need a powerful GPU beyond multi-monitor support. However, I definitely like to play video games and would love to know what gpu to buy! I imagine a lot of people have similar reasons for a Dell Precision, HP Elitebook or Lenovo W530 so this post could be a huge help! Thanks in advance!

All I can help with is...

    NVIDIA Quadro K5000M
    StarCraft 2
    Max settings.
60 fps constantly --- except under EXTREME situations in custom games where there are tons and tons of units

Thanks Aaron! This post has only been up for a little over 6 hours and already has over 150 views. I knew there must be a lot of other people looking for the same information...

Out of these ones, the only one i could test is SC2 (i'll need to install though) on my firepro unless there is a benchmark tool for some of those games. If there is a benchmark too, let me know and i'll run it. I won't be able to really take the time for testing until the middle of next week though.

The short answer is that if you run the K5000M GPU at 720 and the RAM at 1800 you will get almost exactly the same results as a stock GeForce GTX 680M running 720/1800.

I have been running extensive tests on the K5000M and 680M for a project I am working on and they are the nearly the same.

    Here is an example -

Hitman Absolution Benchmark at 1920x1080, Ultra Preset, V Sync off.

    K5000M -
    Min FPS - 33.962265
    Average FPS - 42.542442

    GTX 680M -
    Min FPS - 33.009708
    Average FPS - 42.338345

The 680M may be able to overclock more. I am not sure. Have not tried overclocking it.

Also, please don't be stupid with overclocking. Running the K5000M at 680M speeds is a fairly safe. If you bump up the RAM speeds to something ridiculously high, you could break the card. If you break something, it is your fault. Be smart people.

Is the M6000 overclockable, and also, could it use the 7850/7870 drivers?

Don't think of it as a penalty OP. The two are just "tuned" differently. Quadros do what they're designed to do best, and gaming cards do what they do best...game. There is a region where they cross over and perform each others tasks. However, it doesn't typically cost you time/money if in your gaming every frame isn't 100% accurate.

Anyway, I've investigated their gaming capability too, and most reviews show Quadros can game fine. I've estimated they do about 70% of their comparable gaming brethren. I'd be interested to see the results here.

Perhaps the next generation of laptop will come with quick release CPU/GPU modules so these compromises won't be an issue. One can only hope. Happy gaming...after work that is.
    No fair. :p
