im going to vlite my own vista install cd an strip it of all the drivers and crap i dont need or want but im concerned about the security side of things

i have the fips fingerprint scanner and i have seen some people having issues with getting it to work properly after a reinstall i think the control point software has to be installed first is this true ?

anyone else using a vlited image on their machine and is everything running smoothly ?

I'm on XP not vista, but have done a re-install, I needed to install DCP security drivers and *then* DCP security app, fingerprint functionality is better but still not entirely reliable, but then it was highly unreliable before the reinstall, I'm hoping for another round of updates soon ...

hi andy cheers for the inpit mate , did u try the other fingerprint software by any chance instead of the wave embassy suite its called UPEK protector suite it was suggested to me heres the posters comment

Have you tried the UPEK Protector Suite QL? I have got it working with a Dell USB UPEK fingerprint reader and it does support logging in to websites. In addition it seems much more stable then the WAVE Embassy software. The FIPS fingerprint reader in E6500 is made my UPEK so there is a good chance it will work.

To the get the UPEK Protector Suite QL, download it from the Dell Vostro 1510 Download and Drivers page. If you decide to use this software you should probably purchase a proper license from UPEK.

You probably need to install updated UPEK drivers before installing UPEK Protector Suite QL. You can download them from UPEK: http://www.upek.com/support/download...rs/windows.asp

BTW, do you think you could take a screenshot of the device manager showing the FIPS fingerprint reader device on E6500? It would be good to know if it looks different from the standard fingerprint reader on E6400.

i tried it but it kept saying the broadcom reader could not be recognised or something i dont know if this had anything to do with the fact that i had the wave embassy suite still installed i am going to give it a go when i do a fresh install see if that makes any difference

as i really fancy using the fingerprint reader for logging onto websites etc just feels like im getting more practicality for my money and convenience and security

Yes I tried, the upek suite didn't recognise the Broadcom USH driver, so I removed that driver, but then the Authentec driver wouldn't recognise my fingerprint hardware.

In effect I think the Latitude E series fingerprint readers are "hidden" from the OS behind the Broadcom Credential Vault.

Certainly I found that un-installing Wave didn't actually remove all parts of it.

so we are stuck with the crappy wave embassy suite , would have been much more functional to have website logon or things like msn logon if possible , and to think i paid more for the more expensive apparently better fingerprint reader .... just my luck

i will have a late night in the next couple of days and have a good go at trying the upek suite from a fresh install if not il just format again and go the embassy route, heres hoping !

I think you can forget about getting the upek suite to work. Sorry if I gave you false hope. I mailed UPEK support and first they said it would work if I had a UPEK fingerprint reader in my E6400 but when I sent them a screenshot from Device Manager showing that the fingerprint reader is connected through the Broadcom USH the support person said that he had not seen something like that before and that it would not work.

Maybe, maybe a future version of DigitalPersona will work since parts of the fingerprint recognition on E6400/E6500 is done with DigitalPersona software but it is a long shot.

I will use an external fingerprint reader with my E6400 instead. I got almost 5% refund on my laptop because it didn't include a UPEK fingerprint reader as advertised.

The Embassy/Wave software does have some functionality for storing website passwords in the TCG Security Password Vault, if you enable and establish ownership of the TPM.

I don't know any more than that, because I haven't used the functionality.
