I've read on different forums that this is apparently a problem with some laptops. I have a Dell Latitude D620, and I've got the following problem:

Whenever I try to use the external mic, there is an aweful lot of background noise. So much so that the voice is virtually indistinguishable. Similar problem with the internal mic. Other than that, it's been working beautifully for 2 years!

I've checked the audio drivers (only Sigmatel Audio) and I have the latest one.

I have read the suggestion that one can try running the computer without the power adapter plugged in. That didn't make much of a difference. I've tried three other microphones and all with the same problem.

I really want to make this work, since I want to record videos that can help high school students who are taking IB courses. I've got funding from a local organization and will provide free videos (I'll post them on youtube) about how to go through exam questions, etc.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem with external microphone noise? I would really appreciate any suggestions. I have heard that maybe an external sound card could do the trick. If so, any recommendations?

    Cheers,

    Mitch

you could have an external soundcard as you say or maybe a usb mic ? never used one but it moves everything "off" the laptop so to speak and they use there own hardware to send audo back to the laptop

if its driver related you could try a fresh instal (my favourite cure for any problems :) )

some people dont install the drivers for there sound if windows offers a default driver you could try removing the sigmatel one if you dont want to do a reinstal
