Thanks. It's useful to see some hard numbers.

So 2.9kg with 6 cell which makes my E6400, at a fraction over 2.3kg, seem feather-weight.

Wow, 6.4 lb vs. John's 5.1 lb E6400 makes a HUGE difference to me. I don't understand why the 15" screen is so much heavier, unless the CCFL vs. LED makes a huge difference.

I think this weight difference is significant enough to warrant people sticking to the E6400 even though the two models aren't that much different in terms of size.

BTW, has anyone besides John Ratsey confirmed the E6400 weight of 5.1 lb (my setup will include the dedicated graphics card unlike his, not that that matters much)?

I read about CCFL vs LED and from what they say the WUXGA (CCFL backlight) display is heavier than the WXGA+ (LED backlight) one. This means that the E6500 should be slightly lighter with the WXGA+, but I cannot confirm it yet because I still haven't measured mine due to the inaccurate scales I possess :)

Also the CCFL backlight screen's brightness seemed to fade over time while the LED one held it's brightness longer. That's what I've heard. Feel free to correct me :)

The WUXGA ccfl must have a lot to do with it.

I just weighed my E6500 +6 cell battery on an Omron calibrated scientific scale at 5.8lbs/2.63kg.

    The E6500 is pretty well loaded with the following;

    E6500 + 6 cell battery
    WXGA+ 15.4" LED
    X4500MHD
    2x2GB ram
    320GB HD Scorpio Black
    Intel 5300 wifi
    Backlit kybd
    Fingerprint reader
    Bluetooth

    Total weight = 5.8lbs/2.63kg

@MiB: What GPU do you have?

I find it difficult to believe that the display difference could account for such a big difference in weight (0.25kg). That's nearly the weight of a 6 cell battery.

Wow. Great work... that's a huge difference! I really want to know how Dell gets their numbers from!

I wonder how Dell came up with "starting at 5.2 lbs" for the E6500? Perhaps it's a unit with the following configuration:

    1) optical drive replaced with a travel bezel

    2) the 1440x900 LED display

    3) a solid state drive

    4) one RAM stick (about 0.015 lb per stick)

    5) smallest battery -- is it 6-cell?

    6) no WiFi card, no Bluetooth, no modem, no fingerprint reader

In addition, I bet Dell rounded down the weight from 5.24 lb to 5.2 lb.

Sigh, I was hoping the 1920x1200 E6500 would be a nice upgrade for my 14.1" T42 Thinkpad, which has been modded to have a 1600x1200 screen and weighs 5.01 lb with travel bezel and 2.5" PATA hard drive. If the 1920x1200 E6500 weighs over 6 lb, it's out of the question.

I think that the dedicated graphic adds to the weight a bit, not that much the display
