The price isn't out yet, but school's starting for me. I have the option of Asus 1000H, the MSI Wind or the Dell E4200 (biggest screen). I want to know if the Dell is going to be above $500 for the most basic mode....with XP. Any guesses?

If that's the case, what would you prefer, Asus or MSI Wind? ^_^

Absolutely definitely above $500. More like 3 times the price!

The EEE PC 1000H and MSI wind are netbooks (sub-notebooks) and come in at or below the $500 mark alright. The Latitude E4200, on the other hand, is a high performance ultraportable business class notebook and comes at a premium. Dell are bringing out their own line of netbooks in the coming weeks apparently starting at $249/$349. Perhaps that is what you are thinking of?

I've searched the net for any shred of information regarding the E4200's upcoming price (from a respectable source that heard a rumor).

The guess of most people is a starting price between $1300-$2000 USD. So, we're talking about a starting price which is 2-3 times higher than that of the most popular netbooks.

I think that Dell is not giving a price for the E4200 because they're waiting for Lenovo to give a price for the X200S. Lenovo is not giving a price for the X200S because they're waiting for Dell to give a price for the E4200. They can't play this game much longer though...

No, the E4200 is not th eDell netbook. In fact they will probably prove to be the most expensive of the Latitude line up. You are paying a high premium to have an extremely light but yet still high performance system.

The netbooks will be launched imminently, possibly at the same time as the E4200/E4300, which are due to be launched next week according to the Dell rep I deal with.

e4200 is not a netbook. it has up to 5GB ddr3, led baclit display, 64 or 128GB ssd, wlan, wwan, w broadband.

e slim is more the netbook. thats not in this family of systems despite the "e"

The Dell netbook is officially called the Inspiron 910. Some of the support documentation has already shown up on the Dell website which is more evidence for the imminent launch of the system...
