It will be under the USB Controllers at the bottom of the list.

There are effectively two devices: (i) the external controller; and (ii) the storage device attached to the controller.

That strange drive name is infectious.

I have just had a message pop up to say my E6400 has found a new disk drive, and it now shows up in Device Manager. Same name as your HDD. My optical drive disappeared at the same time.

I suggest that you roll back the driver for your SATA controller.

    This is stange, indeed.

But in my case, remember the disk wasn't showing on my desktop computer either. So it's not just a SATA driver problem, I guess.

May I ask you how to do this?

But I presume that you connected to the desktop using USB.

Device Manager > IDE ATA/ ATAPI Controller > Intel SATA /AHCI Controller > Driver > And press the Roll Back Driver button. This assumes that you had the earlier driver installed. If not, then download the A01 matrix storage driver then use the update driver option and point to the folder with the older driver.

If the new driver is part of your problem then please report it in this thread. I am assuming your current driver is 8.7.0.1007 from 4th Dec 2008.

    I found my problem!

I feel a little bit stupid but, seriously, it wasn't that easy to spot: The power supply cable going to the enclosure couldn't enter completely because there was a small blocking piece of plastic inside the end of the cable. It wasn't easy to tell that this was the problem because there was enough power for the enclosure light to be on!! A soon as I removed the piece of plastic, and pushed the cable deeper inside the enclosure, everything worked!

Now I'm formatting the 1TB drive, I guess it's gonna take a little while!

Thanks again for the help John, it's really appreciated.

Thanks for the explanation. I suspect the enclosure was getting enough power but the HDD wasn't spinning up.

But tell us if that strangely named HDD reappears.

It's not there anymore... I did roll back the SATA driver as you suggested and rebooted. I have no idea what did the trick to remove the ?&?* drive!

I think that strange name is a bug with the new matrix storage driver. I'm trying it out at the moment.
