My 6 years old M4400 just kicked the bucket last week. The cooling fan controller on the MOBO died from overheating which is a common issue with all mobile workstations, not just Dell. Anyways, I'm considering the 3510, 5510 and 7510 as a replacement.

Is it true that CPU on these are embedded to MOBO like the GPU is? If that is the case, then I would rule out 5510 as its hidden vents are partially blocked by the hinges.

The Skylake mobile CPUs are not available in socketed form, so the CPUs are soldered onto the motherboard so to speak. (I'm guessing this is what you are talking about.) You'll have to make sure that you purchase the system with the CPU that you want to keep.

The 7000 series has an MXM slot for the GPU, so the GPU is replaceable. You could swap it out down the line if you like.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks 7510 is a better choice for longevity.

To get latest gen Intel CPU that is not-soldered in a laptop you would need to look at a Sager mobile workstation. They are using desktop i7-6700(k) with up to m5000m quadro. And if someone didn't require quadro they also have a "gaming" laptop with same desktop i7-6700k but with a desktop gtx 980 (not a mobile 980m). Two 2.5 sata bays + two m.2 PCIe SSD . WIth 2TB 2.5 SSDs available and up to 1TB m.2 available, someone could put 6TB of storage into a laptop running desktop i7 with desktop GTX 980. That is over the top (in a good way). And it is supposedly okay on temps, although very very loud.

The Sager is actually pretty enticing. Support would make me nervous though as it is a big unknown to me. I don't think they have NBD or Accidental (except for the display). *I got off topic, but yeah all latest gen mobile CPU are soldered, it's not just a Dell thing

Well Sager has been around forever... I remember their ads from the early 90s. Even then they had high end components. The problem is you'll have to remain tethered to an outlet as the battery life is basically non existent. Think more portable desktop. I don't know their warranty but over 20 years in business is an eternity in the notebook world and they've been around. If I'm not mistaken they may have been around long enough to have sold laptops with monochrome passive matrix screens and 80286 and 80386 processors!

As for Dell, the motherboard is replaceable in the 7000 series, which potentially could mean a motherboard swap down the road.

But basically any Clevo-based machine would allow processor upgrades via pin socket. The problems are extreme weight, poor battery life, and designs that were ugly 10 years ago let alone now.....
