    Hey guys,
Went to update the webcam firmware on my e6510, and the whole machine locked up after starting the application (windows 8). I hard shut it down, and now at boot, the fans spin up and the scroll, caps, and num lock lights up, but the caps lock blinks. The process then repeats, with nothing on the screen. Is there any way to fix this?

EDIT: Whelp, after pulling the RAM and drives, as well as pulling the CMOS battery and holding the power button for ~30 seconds, it booted up normally (WHEW). It appears the camera doesn't work, but I'm VERY hesitant to touch that FW update tool again.

Well, at the very least, you can probably fix the camera by buying a new camera board... those are pretty cheap and plentiful for the E6510/E6410.

I think I have some idea what happened. When I rebooted (after dealing with bit locker after the TPM was cleared), I found that the camera hadn't worked with the driver from dell's site that I had installed earlier. I'm not sure if it ever worked, as I had simply installed the driver and not tested the cam. When I installed the default Microsoft driver, the camera was back to normal. I believe the lockup during the firmware update was due to the driver from Dell's site. Not sure what led to the machine being unable to boot for some time.

PSA: firmware updates can be a big hassle, so if it isn't broken (and the update is insignificant), leave it alone.
