    Hey guys,
Does anyone here have an e6510 with a hard drive in the optical bay? I'm looking into buying a caddy, although I'd like to boot from the drive that's installed in it. Can the machine boot from a hard drive in the DVD bay, or will it simply serve as added storage?

I actually bought a 2nd HDD caddy from fleabay but the mechanism for ejecting was not included. I am used to an ejecting mechanism that is built into the laptop (e.g., ThinkPad ultrabays). The Dell does not have such a feature therefore make sure the caddy you get has an ejecting mechanism built in! I thought I could use the one from the optical drive but forget it. It seemed it would unavoidably be invasive and the latch on the optical drive seemed like it would not fit as well. Good luck :)

I can't say for sure about that machine, but I can boot from a drive in the optical bay on my M4800.

If the system will boot from a CD or DVD (which it should) then it should also recognise a bootable HDD using the same SATA port.
