tubby: Thanks for the info. Battery life isn't very important to me, I've been using my current laptop without battery at all for about two years. Will it be possible to have the CCFL replaced or replace it myself by a new one when it has dimmed considerably? And would that be very expensive?
    Thanks again.

I have two CCFL Dell screens on different notebooks: one is 9 years old, a 15" UXGA, and the other is 4 years old, a 15.4" WUXGA, and neither has dimmed since purchase (cross fingers!). Maybe they can take quite a long time to dim? I would be interested to know more...

I have a 5.5 yr old Fujitsu S6120 with a CCFL 13.3-inch screen (1024x768) and it has dimmed considerably. I remember I used to use it at half brightness when I got it (it was already 2.5 yr old when I got it) and at the end I had it at max brightness and still thought it was too dark.

I would guess it's a bit of a gamble: some dim, some do not.

Yes you could replace the CCFL with another CCFL screen yourself. Since it's a business class notebook there's a lot of parts like screens/keyboards/etc up on ebay. You could order it by part number from Dell too but ebay is usually cheaper.

Take a look here to see the exact details of how to replace the screen yourself from the service manual:

Which would you recommend? I am afraid the 2CCFL will be too much of a battery drain. Does anyone have personal experience?

Sorry for the late reply. I'm pretty fortunate I guess. My backlighting is pretty even.

To whoever moved my post into this thread, my question is not answered here. I already knew 2CCFL uses more battery, I wanted to know how much more. The OP is not concerned with battery life but with appearance of the screen. They are separate issues.
