I'm planning on getting an E6500 with the 64GB SSD (performance option - I assume this is the Samsung SLC version). It's my understanding that SSD's run a lot hotter ( since they are solid state chips) than a corresponding conventional HDD.

I would also think that they would consume less power than the conventional HDD, but what about the additional heat causing the fan to come on more often and/or at higher speeds? Would this negate the power savings?

Any comments would be appreciated. Also, FWIW I will be sticking with the Intel 4500MHD integrated graphics.

    Thanks,
    Harvey

I have a Samsung SLC in my E6400 (though it may not be the same as the one Dell gives you). It doesn't seem to run any warmer than the 80GB, 5400RPM drive with which my machine shipped (though the lack of a temperature sensor means this is subjective). The power-saving value of an SSD is (at least to my knowledge) still somewhat inconclusive, but at the very least, they won't consume MORE energy than a regular spinner.

Where did you read it would be hotter? Almost all the reviews I've read, the reviewers commented how cool and quiet the SSDs are, so much that they couldn't even tell it was on.

I have a Mtron Mobi SSD in my E6400,it runs cool and is sooo much better than a platter drive ,you won't regret getting one(SLC)

Not sure where - but I remember seeing a number around 70 degrees C. I'm just assuming that they would have temperatures comparable to memory chips. On my other laptop, the memory chips typically run 10-15 deg. C hotter than my 7200 rpm HDD.

    Thanks,
    Harvey

You might consider waiting for Dell to move its new 128 & 256 GB SSDs to the E6500's options, they're a new generation of Samsung SSDs, and are supposed to perform very well.
