    Hi all

Does anyone have experience with their Powered USB on their E6500 Laptops? This is supposed to be able to power USB devices even when off.

I cannot get it to work, neither in Standby nor shut down does this port charge my iphone. My friend who has the same E6500 has the same problem.

Of course the function is turned on in the BIOS (latest Version A11 installed). Am I missing anything?

    Thanx

This is Apple for you. The device does not accept USB power as any other device would. That is also why you can't use one of those generic AC->USB power adapters to charge iPods/iPhone.

Has nothing to do with the laptop at all. Apple just won't let the iPhone charge unless it is a dock (which pays licensing fees) or is connected to a computer running iTunes.

The USB PowerShare works fine on my E6400. Note that it only works on one port (on the E6400 it's the one above the USB/eSATA port)

However, one thing that I noticed is to charge a device that is already connected when you shut down or hibernate the computer then you need to unplug the device and plug it in again when the computer is off. I think this is to stop unnecessary and unintended leakage of power to another device connected to that port.

John, it simply doesn't work with iPods. Neither does my simple AC (wall) power to USB power adapter.

OK. I wouldn't dream of buying one to find out if this is true. My Creative Zen charges fine.

I thought it worthwhile listing the various troubleshooting steps in case anyone else who has problems getting their PowerShare to work comes across this thread.

    Hey Guys

To me that does not really make sense cause the iphone charges fine when the PC is turned on. However it is true that the iphone does not charge with a Standard USB charger.

Does that mean the current going thru the Powered USB Port is reduced when the the Dell is turned off or is there a "signal" missing which the iphone needs to allow charging?

I will try tonite when I get back home with my bluetooth headset to see if that charges

Thanx so far for your replies.

There is a signal missing. It is simplly 5 volts of DC power coming through the USB cable, and Apple wants some type of signal. It functions the same as a standard USB to AC adapter.
