Quick question, I would like to connect my Latitude E6500 to my hdtv using the display port on my Latitude. My TV has hdmi inputs but no display port inputs.

Do I just need a "display port to hdmi" adapter? Or is the display port on the E6500 proprietary in any way?

From photos I searched up, it looks like a normal displayport in which case a normal displayport to HDMI adapter should work.

    Hi,
The Latitude E6500 has a DisplayPort connector as shown in the Picture :1 below. As suggested by namaiki you can use a DisplayPort to HDMI connector (Picture 2) to obtain the display on the TV.

The DisplayPort has the capability to provide a scalable digital display interface with optional audio and high-definition content protection (HDCP) capability for broad usage within business, enterprise, and consumer applications. The interface is designed to support both internal and external digital display connections. Examples of external applications for DisplayPort include display connections between PCs, monitors, and projectors.

By consolidating the internal and external signaling methods, DisplayPort enables the introduction of "direct drive" digital monitors, resulting in the most efficient means possible for delivering flat panel display technology to end users.

DisplayPort is also suitable for connectivity between high definition content applications such as optical disc players, mobile devices, personal video recorders, and TVs.

Thanks namaiki and Dellswapnajan for the informative information. For some reason I was just not sure if it was mini display port or regular display port, now I know. :)

I tried just now for the 1st time to use the display port on my E6500 using a Dell displayport to DVI adapter. I'm not receiving any signal on my DVI monitor. Is there some setup for the displayport or a means of troubleshooting it?

Have you tried using Fn+F? (F8 on my E7440) to switch between the video output devices?

You may also need to have the external display plugged in before you (re)start the computer. Recent notebooks can usually detect an external display while they are running but older ones are not so good in that respect.
