Just goes to show you should only get genuine adapters... that being said, the power connector is a separate piece on the E6420; have you tried replacing just that?

As I said, I was desperate. It got me out of trouble during 3 weeks of seminars.

Regarding the power connector, I decided to at least try just removing it and putting it in again, hoping that somehow, just maybe, that would register some change. Nope. Nothing. Still does not charge through the power port.

I had a good look at it, and tried to see if there is any circuitry or something within the connector itself. Or if any of the wires were burnt out. I couldn't see anything like that. Is there some circuitry within the connector itself, or is it just straight pass-through wires to the main board plug on the end of the wires. If so, I fear it may be some fuse or capacitor or something on the main board itself.

Should I try replacing the connector?

    Cheers.

[EDIT: I've decided to try replacing the power port. Just ordered one on ebay. Will see how it goes. Just a note for anyone reading along. I've got the Nvidia discreet graphics system. Note, the power port (p/n J90M8) is a different part number to the integrated graphics system. Being different, this leads me to think there is something going on inside the power port itself. Hoping this resolves my problem.]

Any one have any idea about the thickness of the thermal pads used in the E6420 for
    1. intel chipset
    2. Nvidia GPU (?)

I can see a thermal pad on the Intel chipset, but on the CPU and Nvidia GPU, are thermal pads used or thermal paste?

    Cheers,
    PaulC

I have e6420 and plan to buy a docking station in the near future.

If I disable Optimus in BIOS will the docking station's displayport and dvi still work in outputting signals to external display?

I have the Quad-core i7 version of this machine, and I can assure you that 16GB RAM works just fine. Been running with it for almost a year, no issues. Don't remember what BIOS I'm on, but probably the latest-- I remember doing an upgrade. Also using two hard drives, with a cheap caddy that goes in the bay where the DVD burner was. Thinking about getting a pair of these and going RAID 0:

You can configure this drive to use 4GB of RAM as disk cache. It would FLY. (Basically, with a little help from VMWare, I could carry a little Hadoop cluster on my back :) not big enough for real Big Data but hey, what do you want in a six pound package?)

I think the Disk score is a little low for an ssd at 6.9, but is there some reason for this? I have the nvidia gpu and im getting some copper shims, but aside from that does anyone have any advice for making this machine optimal software wise? I plan on upgrading the ram soon.

I dunno what SSD you have, but if your drive is performing at the rated R/W specifications, I wouldn't worry about the WEI being low.
